Overheating '04 R1.

I've got a bit of a problem with my '04 R1. Whilst in heavy traffic the temp went up to maximum but the fans didn't kick in and it ended up overheating. Now, i've had the thermostat out but it works fine and the fans check out ok. To save time and energy does anyone have any idea what could be wrong, or is it just a case of tracing it back from the thermostat to the fans?

Help.

is there a thermister on the rad, this should bring in the fans, (i think) if its run by the ecu it may have a thermister on the rad as an emegency back up, check for wires (2) going to a small terminal on the rad, never had an r1 myself but other bikes / cars i have titted about with had them

good luck

Sorry, couple of beers in, but these have always been good for making tea :icon_blackeye:

Yeah, check out 'trickery, i.e. elec', but good news is that no matter how hot it gets you'll not kill it.

P1 have run one (Albacete '04) with no water for about an hour and it didn't die. Oil smelt a bit 'deathy', like should have mains & big end shell soup instead of oil, but nothing worn at all. Melted the plastic oil pickup spout, from the sump up to the oil pump, into a funny shape and every thing from crank to cams was heat-treated (golden), yet still live. Nothing failed

Cavitation and subsequent air lock is probably gonna be a factor. To bleed in properly, you've got to tip it over on it''s side with the motor running, from cold. I'm guessing that, over time, the system has got a bit furry and needs new coolant.

There's a small bore pipe that runs from the water pump inlet, by the front sprocket, up to the back of the block, underneath the injectors, that primes the circuit. This pipe feeds into the circuit just before/at the thermostat and any problems here will mean that water will not circulate. We thought that we could do without this when running a race rad and no thermostat block when we first got these bikes and found that water would not circulate at all. No idea how this works, but the '09 bike is equally as stupid! Check this pipe for crimps or fretting.

I'd give it new coolant, tip it over on it's side stand and 'pump/squeeze' the hozes for a while. Run it up and continue pumping the hoses, you'll be amazed how much more you can get into the rad filler on the right.

PS now you know this I'll have to kill you, the official advice from Yamaha is that you need a bike bench that will tilt the bike up 45 degs. You'd be amazed how many bike teams have now got one :eusa_pray:

Alternatively you could lean the bike over onto a small child / large dog /take it into the living room and lean it on the settee . If you put the bike into diagnostic mode no 51 and turn the kill switch on it will activate the fan relay 5 times ,if you dont know how to do it PM me

Thanks for all the tips, nice to know it'll take a lot of stick before it seizes. I'll give them a go and report back. Ronenige, you have a PM.
