1997 vfr750 charging issue

Recommended Posts

My neighbour has a well kept '97 vfr750fv.

It's not charging correctly so far I've....

Battery is at 13v resting and drops to 10.5v when starting

Brand new and a aftermarket reg rec , show charging at less than 13v and just over 13v

The stator dynamic test was 65v,60v and 30v

This was the from the plug nearest the stator, I'm guessing it's sounds like one phase on the stator has gone technical

Does this sound about right? Not checked this kind of thing for yeast

Stator is crispy on one phase - you are right!  You'll be able to see it..and possibly on one of the 3 yellow charging wires to the reg rec - check they aren't also turning toasted

Considering the age of the bike, it’s still done well to last this long I guess 🤔

I get the stators for my old Honda's checked by west country windings. It didn't need a rewind, but while they had it I had the flying leads changed to 1 metre long so I could wire directly into the reg/rec. I also created a small loom so that the reg/rec fed directly into the battery.

yes, sounds like the stator could be the culprit. Also check the 1st connector on the above the clutch, they tend to fail and could I guess cause a bad reading if you checked the AC output in the connector going into the rec/reg unit.

I have have a pdf copy of the service manual for these, let me know if you need it!

The connection is in remarkably good condition,

At least the reg/rec is not original

I finally had a chance to remove the stator, one of the wires was broken and one partially worn through.

Looks like I remember stuff from Merton tech neatly 40 years ago

I'm going to send it to west country windings @EXUPDEL get them to test it and rewind or just replace the wires, he's just bought a s1000xr so the vfr is going as soon as it's fixed
