CBR400 Starting Problem

For the past week the cbr has been getting harder to start, usually the trick is to hit the start button and give the throttle a slight twist, it will spin up and then ill pull the choke out to keep it ticking over for a few mins to get warm. But the other morning it took a few tries of the button to get it going and its been getting worse everyday!

And now its at the point where i killed the battery yesterday trying and its even having problems starting when its warm!! :) Oh and it runs fine when ive bumped it and im riding

Although ive had to knock the idle up slightly because it cut out on me twice the other day when i was at traffic lights just on idle! ;)

But a few things have led me to believe it could be the reg rec?

A while back all my lights were going out when i pressed the brake, i was only left with my front headlights! but then they would randomly come back on. this happened about 2 - 3 times in a week

the other day one of my 2 main headlights went out but then kept coming back on... i thought i loose wire but its been fine since!?

so there has been a few electric problems and from random googling ive read alot about the cbr4's and there mega poop REG REC's

But will it still run fine if the reg rec is dodgey? bare in mind i did have to up the idle slightly because it randomly cut out a few times! so you could say the bike has been abit dodgey!

;)

Thanks for reading!

Help appreciated! :eusa_pray:

ok cheers, since i dont have a charger! ill bump it and head for a blast! i know its not the same but it should at least give some life into the battery for 1 start, then ill charge it later and over night!*

Thanks for the quick reply! :)

*if i can borrow TriGGer's charger again ;)

EDIT: But does that sound like a reg rec to you guys? cause the bike was getting crappy so i upped the idle and now its fine, just wont start! if the reg rec was dodgey would the bike still run fine like that?

ok i went out on an epic ride! blasting down the motorway etc...!

left it outside my house for a little over an hour and been out and literally touched the start button and it was on!!

Maybe the battery was quite low?

I had the same problem with my old NC29, i had to change the battery and the alternator.

The reg/rec had survived however they are a weak point

These are the contact details for the great Graeme France, CBR400 specialist, he hooked me up with all the bits i needed to get mine running again. Top bloke!

Graeme France is a top feller, but make sure you don't get another Honda one, get an aftermarket one with the fins on it, they tend to be more reliable. Then, when you're fitting it, relocate it to somewhere that's in a bit of breeze, somewhere it'll get a bit of cooling. Finally, make sure the connections on your loom to the reg rec aren't corroded.

It could be that your battery is/was low and the spark was weak as a result, but really if you were to decribe the symptoms I'd say you've got a fuelling issue, maybe blocked idle jets or something. Obviously, charging the battery is way easier, so do this first.

ok well its on charge atm! but so far the bike has been brilliant after my 90mph blast down the motorway!

Literally push the button and its up and running! even after leaving it for an hour or so! it wont get used tomorrow but hopefully the weather will clear up and ill head out sunday evening!

ill see how it starts after a days rest!

Thanks for the help guyssss!

The lights going out thing sounds like a wiring fault.

Does it have an alarm? If so, get it gone and properly splice the wires it cuts into (main ignition and starter relay in my experience) with a bit of solder and some heat shrink, or at least some proper crimps. Might be a good idea to check your main earthing points on the frame and engine too, these being ally with a steel screw in you can get corrosion which will cause some problems.
