jackod1
Hi there im new to this forum, my bike is currently in pieces and i want to strip all the paint off my swingarm and high polish it, does anyone have any recommendations on what to use as i have tried some nitro mors that i had laying around but it barely blistered any of the surface and im not to keen on sanding down the whole thing because it will take too long. Cibbersicks
What bike's the swingarm off? To get an idea of the finish. When I did mine I took it to an alloy wheel specialist who chemically stripped it, because, like yours, Nitromors wouldn't touch it. Mine was a Honda CBR swingarm. jackod1
its a 2006 zx6r, so i would imagine its very similar to the cbr. I would prefer not to go to spend too much on it and how did they go around stripping it, did they dip the whole thing because i only want certain parts done
Adam
How do you mean? As in, just the arms? Sounds like it'd be hard to make the transition between not polished and painted to look neat.
jackod1
Basically the whole thing polished just the part behind the shock that i wasnt going to do
Evilchicken0
I had my bimota swingarm polished and like you nitromos didn't touch it. You can try Caustic Soda which will shift the anodising but you need to get all the rubber and plastic off the arm and I'd take the bearings out too. Caustic is very nasty stuff you need long gloves and don't breathe it in wear a mask and goggles. wash the arm imediately in cold water to get all the caustic off or the alloy will go black. I sent my swingarm away to be polished - you only need the top and outside done
jackod1
Hmmm, caustic soda.... had bad experience with that stuff. How would u go applying the soda? ,just a big bucket of it and soak the swingarm in it and rinse quickly? How long would it take to effect the paint? Mark/Foggy
Caustic won't attack most plastics so the likes of a good washing up brush is your friend. Mix up the pellets by pouring into water NOT the other way around. I'd use a pyrex bowl as it will get hot. Apply with the washing up brush and beware of splashes getting onto you. Good hint is that if you lick where you suspect a spot might have landed on you, if your tongue melts you were right. Don't rub your eyes while working with caustic, best to use a pair of goggles or preferably a visor.
jackod1
Haha great hint il make sure not to try it. Anyway i think il go the caustic soda way or i will go to the local alloy place and see what i can get done cheers for all your help guys! Farmfab01
I used this stuff http://www.frost.co.uk/automotive-paint/por15-paints/por15-por-strip-paint-remover.html BUT BEWARE it is strong stuff & you will need to use it outside as the fumes it gives off are very strong & you will also need to use gloves & goggles as it burns skin too, I stripped off the paint from my Daytona frame & swinging arm with it See this page of my build (post #76 & #83 http://pbmagforum.co.uk/index.php?/topic/39508-955i-daytona-golden-era-superbike-racer/page-
jackod1
Awesome that stuff looks much more preferable, il give that a go
jackod1
Shall do, but to be fair it does state that it wont harm aluminium so it should be ok
Evilchicken0
The active ingredient is probably caustic anyway
Farmfab01
I don't know what ingredients are in it, but it did no harm to my frames or swinging arms - steel or alloy http://www.flickr.com/photos/88357936@N02/8294855042/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/88357936@N02/8264162537/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/88357936@N02/8420538433/
Farmfab01
I have rung Frost for my own peace of mind & the POR-STRIP does not remove anodizing (they do sell product that will)
