Normally the tacho will come off a feed from number 1 coil. (black wire iirc) get your self a decent multimeter mate. 1 wire will/might go to the ECU (Brown) and the other wire is illumination ((black with yellow tracer)) (Again iirc) this also goes to the - side of your battery/ECU/lighting circuit.
