Suspension Help - Ohlins Rear Shock?

Trying to get my RGV500 finished for next year, not really touched it much during the last 6 months but im hoping to get some motivation back and crack on.

1 issue im looking for some help with is the Ohlins rear shock! I need to locate the remote resevior, once ive decided where iam going to mount it the chances are i will need to remove it from the braided hose that attahces to the shock. Question is when i do this iam guessing iam going to lose the gas or oil contained within the resevoir?? Also i may need to have the hose shortened. Who can do this and what is the rough guestimate on a hose change and re-oil/gas?? Am i going to lose gas or oil???

help appreciated

Chris

Why dont you work out how long you want the braided line (use string or rope to work it out roughly) and then send the shock to someone (not me) to have it done for you.. MCT might do it.

IMO a shock refresh along with your mods you want is worth doing while its off the bike, its going to need gassing anyhow..

Any authorised Ohlins suspension dealer (or any suspension specialist worth their salt) will be able to do the work.

I had the hydraulic preload adjuster hose of an Ohlins shock shortened to suit by Crescent Suzuki an while back.

You can undo it but you should IMo be able to get it within a cm or so using string or pipe.

Edit:- Forgot to say all you will lose is oil mate.. You wont have to worry about anything else if you get it sent off to be done.. but if you do the torque is 8nm for the banjo bolt. use new sealing rings either side.use red rubber grease on all o rings if you take the remote res apart.. It will need to be bleed of air on the refill as well.. and you need to use ohlins 105-01 oil.

im going on the guess yours is similar to this

Ok, so it's remote reservoir, not remote preload. Don't undo the hose, you may damage the bladder inside the reservoir. There's going to be oil inside the hose and the bladder inside the reservoir, think of it as an expensive condom, is full off nitrogen at 10bar. That will want to pop if there's not oil to hold it in.

I would use string/rope/hose method, and perhaps a toilet roll and sticky tape to mock up a pattern. There must be something in the kitchen that's the same size as the reservoir.

PMSL that made me laugh but yes you are right.. And the Blue peter way is the safest option.. lol Stickyback plastic.

There is a schrader valve on the top of yours (like a tyre valve) but as Kdog says it is pressurized with nitrogen. You can let the nitrogen out but i would not advise it,best to go with the safe option and mock it up rather than f**k it up iygwim. You can fit your shock and then use a toilet roll as the makeshift res, then use string to work out how long you will need it.. Note.. remember to add the banjo on your length..Most people will use center to center.. meaning the middle of the banjo hole to the other banjo hole. Ring the place you are going to use and ask them how the do the length, that way you wont get it wrong or be upset when it comes back longer.

Good luck mate

As has been said, the oil is pressurised, so do not undo the unions on the Braided line oil will piss everywhere. That model of Ohlins I'm fairly sure has a floating piston in the resevoir between Gas and oil. The nitrogen is filled ans removed via a hyperdermic needle atachment that goes in the end of the reservoir.

Definatly a pro job.
