gsxr renegade
Right, daft as it sounds, does anyone know the best way of cleaning oil off a tyre without damaging it? Was riding to work today, after messing about with the clutch at the weekend, and i don't think the gasket has sealed properly when i put the clutch cover back on, meaning i have a small oil leak, but in the time it took me to get to work this morning, there is oil all over the side of the bike, and in a nice strip all the way around the right hand side of my tyre. Does anyone know how to clean the oil off without damaging the tyre? I'm gonna need to wash the oil off the side of the bike tonight, so will warm soapy water do the trick? I know i should really get a new tyre, but i can't afford one, at least until payday anyway.
Tomfoolery
New tyre? Fuck off! Petrol should be alright if it's not left on the tyre for too long. It's what I've used in the past.

Nice one, was thinking of using a bit of petrol, but wasn't sure if it would do bad things to the tyre.
jollygiant
As long as you use a match aswell?!?!?!? Thats what I've used in the past.. Just soak a rag and keep wiping it!! Oh and plenty of changing of rags as you don't really want to be wiping it back on??
budda
The sump plug fell out of my 7r a few years ago, massive drift on and coasted to a stop, pure fluke I didn't crash. The tyre was completely covered in oil I just washed it off with washing up liquid and hot water, scrubbed it real good with a brush and it was right as rain. Get em washed they'll be reet. jaycee
I used brake cleaner when I accidentally spilled brake fluid on mine, then rinsed it off with the hose sharpish.

I use a bit of brake cleaner sprayed onto a cloth - many racers use it to clear the release compound off the tyre. It evaporates quickly and is designed not to damage the rubber seals in brake calipers anyway. Mark White at M&M swears by the stuff. B
jaycee
See i knew (ok, hoped) Iwasn't being stupid by using brake cleaner
Kayla
I'd have thought something like Muc Off would work well on oil and it's water soluble so won't shouldn't knacker the tyre.
gook184
I've used petrol, it worked fine, i've also used muc off and it needed more effort but made me feel better than using petrol. Those fossils didn't die to be used for cleaning.

Timbo S2
Do a burnout on that bit. Is the correct answer. Ten points. (Failing that, brake cleaner. Then a burnout).

gsxr renegade
Cheers for the advice chaps and chapettes. Cleaned it off last night using a mix of everything! bit of hot soapy water, bit of a blast with the pressure washer, then a bit of a scrub with some petrol and it seemed to work fine. Took it nice and steady on the way in to work this morning, and now it just looks like i've got a massive chicken strip down one side of my tyre!
